When one of the greatest pitchers in softball history shares how she thinks, trains, and competes, athletes at every level have something to learn.
In this episode of When the Cleats Come Off, Ashley sits down with Monica Abbott, Team USA standout and the first female athlete in a team sport to sign a million-dollar professional contract, for a conversation centered on pitching strategy, confidence, recovery, and competing to your strengths.
From movement pitches to mindset, Monica offers a look inside what it takes to dominate in the circle while staying true to the things that make you most effective. The episode also includes a fun story about Ashley’s first time facing Monica at the plate — a moment listeners will definitely enjoy.
Pitching to Your Strengths
One of the key themes in this conversation is the importance of knowing what makes you effective and leaning fully into it.
Monica explains why great pitchers don’t try to be everything at once. Instead, they develop a deep understanding of their strengths and learn how to use those tools with confidence and consistency. That clarity allows pitchers to attack hitters more effectively and compete with conviction.
For younger athletes, this is a powerful reminder that confidence often comes from owning what you do best.
Strategy in the Circle
Pitching at a high level is as much about strategy as it is about skill.
Monica shares how she thinks through at-bats, sequences pitches, and uses movement to keep hitters uncomfortable. She also breaks down the value of movement pitches and why mastering them can help pitchers disrupt timing and force weaker contact.
Her insight reinforces that great pitching is not just about throwing hard — it is about making hitters uncomfortable, staying intentional, and controlling the pace of the game.
Confidence and Recovery Go Hand in Hand
Monica also talks about the relationship between confidence and preparation, including the critical role recovery plays in long-term performance.
She explains why taking care of your body is essential not only for health, but for consistency and confidence over time. Recovery is not an afterthought — it is part of what allows athletes to keep showing up strong, focused, and ready to compete.
This part of the conversation is especially valuable for pitchers balancing heavy workloads and high expectations.
Looking Ahead to the Olympics
As a member of Team USA, Monica also shares her perspective on what lies ahead for the Olympic stage and what fans can look forward to as the game continues to grow internationally.
Her reflections highlight both the excitement of elite competition and the pride that comes with representing your country at the highest level.
